Let Every Country Be Like Britain

Britain should be looked up at highly. Even the United States should do it! Look how they achieved having the lowest driving fatality rates. The World Health Organization found out that the rate of fatal traffic accidents there is in the country is 5.6 people every 100,000 people as compared to the Unites States with 15 for every 100,000. Also, traffic injuries only cost 0.5 percent of Britain’s annual gross domestic product while the United States uses 2.3 percent of it. One more thing, the International Road and Traffic Accident Database states that there are only 7.6 recorded fatalities in Britain for every billion kilometers. Compare that to America’s 9.4 record. That really makes sense.

How did Britain exceptionally achieve all of these? The answer is simple. They have developed the world’s strictest road rules. It all started in the 50’s to the 60’s when Barbara Castle, transportation minister that time, had introduced the 70mph highway speed limit, breathalyzer tests for drivers that are suspected to be drunk, and compulsory seatbelts in new cars. In addition to that, the government of today had implemented tough driving tests, ad campaigns, and speed bumps in the road.

The driving tests they have are so tough that only 42 percent of its takers pass. They also have effective advertising campaigns sponsored by the government, and speed bumps or the “sleeping policemen” are placed in the streets to prevent the drivers to speed up. Their strict reinforcement of every rule on the road is also to be looked up to. They are installing more and more hidden cameras that aid in the ticketing of overspeeding vehicles. Once you get four tickets in the span of three years, then expect for a suspension of your license. The drinking drivers, if they get caught, would not be permitted to drive for a year!

Look how effective Britain is in lessening the dangers brought about by careless people driving on the roads. Every government should be like this. What’s more to Britain now? Their prime minister, Tony Blair, still wants to cut the rate of accidents by 40 percent by the end of 2010.
