Giving Way To The Tire Quarter Test

More than a decade ago, the Penny Test for tires was born. This is the quickest way to determine the tread wear of a tire. You only need to place the coin upside down on a tire’s tread channels. The condition of the tire can be indicated depending on Lincoln’s visibility. With that simple step, you would know if it is time to give your vehicle a new set of tires.

On a standard basis, if the penny still shows the top of Lincoln’s hair, it only means that the tread has worn to less than 2/32 of an inch or 1.6 mm. This condition has been accepted before. However, Tire Rack says that in order to have a safer driving during wet weather, the Penny Test should be raised to the Quarter Test. The Quarter Test raises the 2/32 of an inch to 4/32. This could be known when the amount of rubber upon placing a quarter in a tire’s channels still shows Washington’s scalp.

The 2/32 state of the tire is indeed dangerous because there is little rubber to be used for gripping in emergency situations. In fact, some states here in America had made driving with tires in this condition to be illegal. It is also stated that at high speeds, the resistance to hydroplaning (this is the condition where the tires float over water on the road rather than gripping on the pavement) is reduced and stopping distances is increased.

As compared to the 4/32 condition, the small amount of extra rubber that is present makes a great difference in terms of stopping distances. When you only have 2/32 of an inch tire depth, you are sacrificing a lot on wet stopping ability.

With this, I guess there is nothing wrong in adopting the Quarter Test. You know, you would surely be replacing your tires frequently than usual. But the safety that such offers to you is the best thing you could get. It would really be practical to spend for replacement tires rather than anything else.

Slow Hybrids Are Getting Faster

Perhaps, one of the pitfalls of hybrid vehicles is that they can be so sluggish. That was basically the problem with this vehicle. This is because hybrids use underpowered gasoline engines and electric motors that are only good for lessening fuel consumption but are not actually designed for acceleration. And this is commonly the reason why people, especially those that are after the performance of a vehicle, do not choose such kind of ride. However, the use of hybrid vehicles should be considered by majority of road users to bring something good for the environment. With this fact, manufacturers of hybrid vehicles are converting their hybrids into something more powerful than before.

Though most of the new generation sporty hybrids are still being worked on, there are a comparative number of hybrids that are not that slow compared to the traditional hybrids. The fastest hybrids in the auto market are not that speedy compared to non-hybrids and are not fuel efficient compared to the rest in their lot. However, if you are a kind of driver who wants both acceleration and fuel efficiency in their vehicle, the fastest hybrids are worth considering.

Topping the list of the most powerful hybrids offered in the auto market nowadays is the Lexus GS 450h. Its quickness is far compared to the smaller and lighter Porsche 911. Also, General Motors’ Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, and GMC Yukon Hybrid made to the list. These full-sized SUVs have exceptional towing capabilities for hybrids.

Still, it is a problem that these hybrids cost more than their conventional counterparts. With this, people tend not to patronize them. However, with the unstoppable oil price hikes, it is much practical to invest in such kind that is more expensive compared to enduring everyday the price of fuel.

MirrorPilot: A Safer Rearview Mirror

As a part of the desire of Magna Donnelly to promote a safer travel, it has joined forces with U-Blox (Swiss technology provider) and Paragon (German electronics supplier) to develop a new device. It is called the MirrorPilot—a navigation system that has a map displayed in the rear view mirror.

MirrorPilot

Mounted on the windshield, this rearview self-dimming mirror has a GPS receiver, antenna, speaker, and 2.2-inch screen. By this great move of placing the nav system in the mirror, there’s no more point in worrying about hard installations and limited views of the road.

The MirrorPilot has a special feature of zooming in at intersections and giving the driver a clear route during bumper jams. It also has a remote control so it could easily be used by busy drivers.

Biofuels Are Green No More

Biofuels had been the solution of most auto manufacturers and owners for the unstoppable oil price hike and even the threats of global warming. Its use had been widespread and it has been adopted by most auto owners. However, a potential was seen that these biofuels could contribute to global warming rather than counteract it. Two separate studies conducted by teams from Princeton University and Nature Conservancy had attested to that fact.

Timothy Searchinger, a researcher from Princeton University, said that biofuels that people are currently using could substantially increase greenhouse gases. The emissions should not only be the ones to be looked at in terms of the benefits of biofuels. Instead, its production should not be overlooked. The process of growing, harvesting, and refining fuels could make greenhouse gas emissions twice as much for the next 30 years.

With the two studies’ findings, the name of biofuels as “green fuels” had been tarnished. With this, it is about time to reconsider biofuel policies of different countries worldwide.

Hybrid Vehicles Pose Risk To Blind People

It is not anymore unknown to many that the situation of our environment nowadays had become so alarming. Of course, vehicles are one of the many things that are blamed when this happens. To answer this, auto manufacturers had come up with innovations in their vehicles to make it safe for the environment. An example of this is the spread of hybrid vehicles.

However, though the potential of hybrid vehicles have been greatly recognized, there are still many things that put a hindrance on the plans of this vehicle conquering the road. One of these things is the potential risks to blind people.

Included in the designs of hybrid vehicles is their capacity to be driven at a quieter phase, especially at slower speeds. This fact makes it risky for blind people who are crossing the streets because they purely rely on the sounds of vehicles to know if it’s safe to cross. This situation had created an unexpected tension between hybrid auto makers, environmentalist, and blind people.

With this situation, the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) calls for auto manufacturers to make their hybrids have at least some sound. They want to make hybrid vehicles to sound like all other conventional vehicles. As much as auto makers, auto engineers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Highway Administration want to respond on that call, they admit that they have no immediate high-tech solution for that as of now.

As of the meantime, owners of hybrid vehicles are challenged especially when they come near crosswalks. They could rely first on what they call “low-tech solutions.” These include driving slowly when nearing crosswalks, paying close attention to pedestrian traffic, and playing loud music whenever approaching crosswalks.

With all these things, let us all do hope that everything will just be fine for all concerned people and groups. Of course, it would benefit all of us and the environment as well when hybrid vehicles conquer our streets. However, let’s still care about those people that could be greatly affected too.

Interior Scents Matter (2)

My previous post discussed the scents that should be kept away from the vehicle’s interior, and more importantly, to prevent the driver from experiencing these scents. In fear of the possible effects of smells to your safety, you could come into a decision not to give your car a scent. But, it would bring you no good too. Studies even show that having a neutral smell inside your car could lead drivers to be disturbed that could lead to irritation and hallucinations.

If there are scents to be avoided, there are some that are beneficial. These are as follows:

  • Peppermint and cinnamon. This makes the drivers become less irritable and improves the concentration levels.

  • Lemon and coffee. Also for high concentration levels, these are also good for clear thinking.

  • New car smell (cleaning products and organic solvents). This has the power to make drivers concentrate more and practice more care while driving.

  • Sea ozone. This encourages deep breathing that helps relax the muscles, relieves stress, and calms the mind.

In the event that you are inviting passengers to get inside your vehicle, they will surely be turned-off with smells like pet odor, stale smoke, dirty interior, smelly gym gears, urine or vomit, sickly air fresheners, food wrappers, spilled drinks, mildew from air conditioning, and more.

So, get these things out and stick to the recommended ones. Have a great ride always.

Interior Scents Matter (1)

Road accidents should not be blamed only to carelessness, driving under the influence, defective auto parts, and the usual things often blamed for accidents. Did you know that a study says that there could be one root for speeding, dozing, road rage, and meeting mishaps? Yes, there is. It is the wrong smell inside the vehicle. At first, this sounds so funny yet it pays to follow what I’m saying here.

The RAC Foundation stated in their study that the right smell inside a vehicle could aid the driver distinguish dangers earlier, to keep focused on the road ahead, and to be patient enough to forgive other drivers’ errors. It has been found out that the smell is such a powerful sense that could result to a lack of concentration or an overreaction even to the small irritations on the road. These things could then result to trouble.

Researchers found out that the following scents should be avoided:

  • Chamomile, jasmine, and lavender. Perhaps if you want to sleep, you can get these. Known as relaxing odors, these scents are dangerous for drivers to smell for they could make them too much relaxed in front of the steering wheel. A too relaxed driver is not good as this feeling could lull him to sleep. You should also be aware that air fresheners with flowery scents contain the same effects.

  • The smell from fast food wrappers, fresh bread, and even pastry. These odors could result to drivers’ irritability, the want to speed up, and a greater possibility of being involved in a road rage. This is supported by the fact that these odors could make drivers feel hungry, thus making them want to be in a hurry to fill their appetites.

  • The scent of fresh cut grass, pine woods, or roadside flowers. Indeed, these scents could be relaxing, but these could also make the drives be in a nostalgic stage that could make them daydream while driving.

With these, you should not anymore allow your vehicle interior have odors like those mentioned. Though these smells are not sickly, there’s a proper time and place to satiate your feelings about these smells, but not in your vehicle, please. Care about every road user’s safety.

Do We Have Quality Vehicles Still?

The notion that auto manufacturers of today only produce vehicles just for the sake of coming up with new ones is a hoax. Though the competition among all auto makers is indeed getting tougher, auto companies do not engage in this kind of battle. That is supported by the results of J.D. Power and Associates’ Initial Quality Study.

This study measured the quality of new vehicles during 90 days of ownership. It looked into the problems that were experienced by the owners in terms of quality of design and defects or malfunctions. The group found out that the overall quality of new vehicles improved by six percent this year as compared to last year. This result connotes that many auto manufacturers today are making much effort to provide quality improvements in their vehicles.

To attest to this, some Honda models have gotten three segment awards in this year’s study. These Honda vehicles are the Civic, CR-V, and Fit. Also, Chevrolet, Dodge, Infiniti, Lexus, and Mercedes Benz got to take home two segment awards each. Included are the Malibu and Silverado LD of Chevrolet; Dakota and Durango of Dodge; EX-Series and M-Series of Infiniti; LS and RX of Lexus, and; CLK-Class and E-Class of Mercedes Benz.

Porsche 911

The Porsche 911

At the bottom line of the survey, the Porsche 911 has the fewest seen quality problems in all the new vehicles of the entire automotive industry. It only has 67 problems as per 100 vehicles. Other awardees for quality are the Ford E-Series, Lincoln Navigator, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Pontiac Grand Prix Sedan, and Toyota Sequoia.

Men’s Preference Over Vehicles

Could you easily guess who is behind a vehicle’s windshield by just its exterior appeal? Perhaps you could, especially when you know the preference of the two opposing genders. I will be dealing more today about the preference of the males for I had already discussed in one of my previous posts the choice of women. There you could find what women want for a vehicle. So, now, I think it is just a fair act to talk about men’s preference too. With this, permit me to start.

When we talk about men, they tend to like to own more a vehicle that others can’t have. This is the reason why you could find men driving rare cars. They would more enjoy being seen in a vehicle that is so unique. Also, they would prefer to own those attention-grabbing sports cars, sedans, and sport utility vehicles.

Take for example the Dodge Viper. It has 88.97 percent male drivers because it is a rare find. Imagine, only 435 of them are sold in the entire United States. More than this, the powerful and predatory look of this vehicle makes it loved by men. The Viper has in it a flashy look and a brawly engine sound that has the capability to show off the power of a man. That is commonly what men want to show off. With this, most vehicles manufactured have masculine styling cues like big wheels.

With this kind of preference of men, the vehicle is the equivalent match of jewelry for women. If the women would want to show off their social status, they would get the most expensive necklace or whatsoever. Because men don’t care so much about jewelry, the vehicle becomes their means of showing off what they have. With that, men tend to purchase accessories that will upgrade either the appearance or performance of their vehicle.

Included in the most common vehicles that are driven by men aside from the above-mentioned Dodge Viper are the Bugatti Veyron, Maybach 57, Maybach 58, and the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

What Makes A Vehicle Kid-friendly?

When you plan to purchase a vehicle, of course, you should analyze first your needs so as to find one that is perfectly functional for your day-to-day activities. One thing that would make it difficult for you to decide which one to get is when you have kids to consider as passengers. You should find a vehicle that would entertain them during most of their rides and would be a safe place for them during travels. Plus, how much more would it be difficult if you are on a tight budget?

With three things in mind (entertaining, safe, and affordable), it won’t be difficult for you anymore.  This is because auto manufacturers have made so much effort in upgrading the entertainment capability and safety of their vehicles for children. They are also making such without being much of a burden on the pockets of auto buyers.

Talking about the affordability of child-friendly vehicles, all the luxury and non-luxury vehicles of 2008 that are priced $20,000 to $45,000 have passed the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety crash test rating for front, side, and rear impact collisions. Two of the most kid-friendly vehicles are the Honda CR-V compact SUV and the Toyota RAV4 midsize SUV. These two vehicles are said to offer different kinds of comfort that give kids the feeling of being at home even when they are on the road. In fact, the CR-V is equipped with a retractable center tray table that allows kids to comfortably eat snacks or even play games. The RAV4, on the other hand, has a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

Crash-Avoidance Systems: An Analysis

The fact that road mishaps are happening frequently makes auto manufacturers worry about the safety features that their vehicles are offering. This is the reason why most auto makers continue to develop safety features so as to reduce the number of fatal crashes. Today, they have come up with crash-avoidance technologies that they claim to have the capability to improve the chances of avoiding collisions. Some include technologies that have the capacity to give an audible or visual warning to command the driver to do corrective measures. There are even those which have the capability to automatically apply the brakes or guide back into the proper lane a drifting car.

However, even the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) is getting a hard time to tell whether such is effective or not because its use is not widespread yet. Still, the IIHS just analyzed five crash-avoidance technologies: forward collision warning, emergency brake assist, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, and adaptive headlights.

Of these features, the IIHS sees the forward collision warning and the lane departure warning as the most promising features. The forward collision warning feature gives the driver a warning whenever it detects that the vehicle is about to hit an object directly in front of it. On the other hand, the lane departure warning tells the driver if they are drifting out of the lane.

Based on the information gathered by the IIHS from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System and General Estimates System, the IIHS identified the types of crashes that all these features have been designed to prevent. In period of four years, which is from 2002 to 2006, there is a possibility that the 20 million frontal collisions could be reduced in half with the aid of the forward collision warning. Though it could not totally erase incidents of frontal collisions, a 50 percent reduction is a good deal. On the other hand, the lane departure warning could prevent up to 100,000 crashes and 2,500 fatalities per year.

The IIHS also announced that of the five safety features they have been analyzing, it is the blind spot detection that shows the least potential. This safety feature alerts the drivers of their blind spots. This conclusion is not because that its capabilities are ineffective but because there are not much fatal crashes that involve vehicles in blind spots.

Extending The Service Life Of Your Vehicle

Purchasing a new vehicle at this point in time would indeed cost you a lot of money as compared to the time when you bought your old one. With this, it would be more practical for you to preserve the service of your vehicle rather than replace it as a unit. Making your current vehicle last longer would surely make you spend less. So, I assumed that you want to know how to make your vehicle serve you longer. I compiled these for everyone who may be interested in this.

  • Allow your vehicle to breathe easier. It may not be new to you that when the air filter is clogged, the engine would not properly operate. Therefore, you need to regularly maintain the good working condition of the air filter. The problem in the operation of the engine could make it fail sooner, thus making your vehicle fail as well.

  • Make it cool. Overheating in the engine won’t do you any better. With that, it should be noted that it is a need to maintain the cooling system and ensure that there is a proper coolant level in it. With that, you could be saved from spending more of your money for the repair of your engine.

  • Have the tires’ pressure checked. If you often neglect the tires in your vehicle, then you better reconsider. Ensuring that the tires are given the right pressure means a better fuel economy and safer ride for you as well. With this simple and free task that you can do, you could help lengthen your vehicle’s service.

  • Check the gauge. You could purely rely on the gauge to know if there are problems with your oil pressure, cooling system, or even tire pressure. So, you need to keep an eye on your gauge and do the necessary actions depending on the results you may be reading from it.

  • Allow professional mechanics to check your ride regularly. Establish trust in one repair shop and one mechanic where you can regularly bring your vehicle for check ups.

  • Inspect your vehicle closely. It is advisable that you spend at least five minutes to walk around and look at your vehicle. Check the tires if they are wearing off unevenly. Also, open the hood and see the condition of the hoses. Make sure that all the lights are at the top of their shape. The list of things you should check is endless but it does pay to check them regularly.

  • Follow check-up schedules. You could work on this if you have a trusted mechanic that checks your vehicle. This is because he would know when was the last time something had been done to your vehicle. And of course, he has the right knowledge as to what will be done to your vehicle each time you bring it to him.

  • Be a smart driver. If you don’t know still, the way you drive will directly or indirectly affect the length of your vehicle’s life. When you drive smoothly, you are being kind to your vehicle. On the other hand, when you drive carelessly, you do no good to your vehicle.

  • Maintain the vehicle’s cleanliness. Cleaning both the exterior and interior of your vehicle could very well help preserve the service life of your vehicle. Regular washing and waxing of the exterior would also help. For the interior, regular vacuuming of the carpets should be done. The moment you see spills on it, clean them immediately so whatever was spilt on it won’t be difficult to remove.

  • Keep your vehicle covered. Don’t expose your vehicle to the sun too much. It could do harm to your vehicle. With that, watch where you park your vehicle.

Doing these for and to your vehicle could save you from the costly act of purchasing a new one. However, you should take note that there’s a proper time to replace your vehicle. Pay attention to this detail as it would definitely do you no good to preserve the service of your vehicle when it is not anymore able to serve you as you need it to. Have a good drive always.

Are Really Women More Knowledgeable Than Men?

It is a fact that men are mostly the residents of the roads. Compared to women, we really outnumber them when we talk about the roads. However, though a bit intriguing, they say women are much more knowledgeable than us when it comes to knowledge about basic car care. So when a woman seeks for advice from a man about car care, she’s probably not in good hands.

Though the national survey, which was sponsored by Jiffy Lube, it was found out that 69 percent of men and 64 percent of women agree that men know more about car care. Their responses speak otherwise.

When respondents were asked where the proper tire-inflation information of the vehicle is located, 67 percent of men and 45 percent of women said that it is in the sidewalls of the tires. However, Mark Ferner, the technical expert of Jiffy Lube, said that it was wrong. He stated that this information could be either seen in the vehicle’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual. In that question alone, 22 percent of women while only 16 percent of men have the right knowledge with regards to that information.

Moreover, 67 percent of men and 46 percent of women were wrong when they say that the act of simply switching from conventional engine oil to a synthetic one extends the oil-change interval. As to this question, it is obvious that more women know the fact about oil-change interval than men.

This entry may not contain the complete findings however, as early as this, I think this really makes sense. Just click here for the complete findings.

No More DIY Carwash

Nowadays, people are taking seriously the effect of vehicles to environment’s condition. With this, they tend to concentrate purely on minimizing the emissions of harmful exhaust gases. Among their efforts are converting their vehicles into hybrid ones and producing alternative fuels that will give off safer emissions. However, what is commonly unknown to us is there are simple things that we usually do in our car that contributes, in a way, to the deterioration of our environment. An example of this is the do-it-yourself (DIY) car washing. So no matter what effort you do in using alternative fuels or hybrid vehicles, if you do you wash your car at your own garage, you will continuously be blamed for the worsening condition of the environment.

In a test conducted two years ago by the Environmental Partners, Inc. in Issaquah, Seattle, the possible impact of untreated car wash wastes was measured using the fish mortality as a measure.

Fish toxicity tests were done using water samples from a car wash event. This gave way to a result of a hundred percent mortality of fish. They found out that detergents, even the biodegradable ones, could be harmful to the fishes’ gills and could wash away the natural oil that helps them absorb oxygen.

You might wonder how this test could be related to your simple act washing your own car. Well, listen. When you wash your car, the detergents and surface residue directly run to the nearest storm drains. When these reach the streams, rivers, oceans, and any other body of water, the effects will surely be felt by aquatic life.

On the other hand, in commercial car wash centers, the dirty waters are not sent to storm drains. It is a must for them that their water be discharged into a separate sanitary sewer that would be even treated and recycled. With that, they do no harm to aquatic life.

May this be a message to people to be more responsible in everything they are doing, even the smallest things. So, let’s continue our fight for a healthier environment.

The Green Cars of Tomorrow

The issue regarding the problems of the environment never seems be die. In fact, it is even getting bigger and bigger as time moves forward. This also became the reason why auto manufacturers never stop to conceptualize future vehicles that would respond to the needs of this present situation. Today, more and more concept green cars are coming out. It is just a sign that the auto world is coping with the problem that has been thrown at them. So now, let’s see what the auto makers have in their minds.

Volvo 3CC

This is the Volvo 3cc concept car. As you see, this is a rocket-shaped three-seater car that has the capacity to accommodate any range of power systems--be it traditional gasoline or alternative fuels like ethanol or hybrid, or electric. It has 3,000 lithium-ion batteries which are similar to those that are used in laptop computers. These can give up to 105 horsepower.

Ford Mercury Meta One

Here’s another one. This is the Ford Mercury Meta One that is a combination of a hybrid transmission and a twin-trubocharged V-6 diesel engine that could run on a bio-diesel blend. With this unique combination, it could have the power that is equivalent to a V-10 but with clean emission levels.

Daihatsu UFE III

This is the Daihatsu UFE III. It is a mini-hybrid van that has the capacity to carry only three people (one at the driver’s seat and two others in the back seat). It has a 660-cubic centimeter direct-injection gasoline engine, two motors, and a nickel-metal hydride battery. It has an estimated fuel economy of 169 miles per gallon.

Nissan Pivo

A bubble-shaped, three-seater electric car has been conceptualized by Nissan. This is called the Pivo.

BMW X3

Named the BMW X3, this unique concept car has a combined direct-injection six-cylinder engine and an electric motor, plus a supercapacitator. The supercapacitator is used in this vehicle instead of the traditional rechargeable batteries that most hybrid vehicles use. This has the capacity to discharge all of its energy in a quick burst of power, and then the gasoline engine takes over until the time that the regenerative braking will discharge the supercapacitator for another quick burst. This results to a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy.

Toyota Volta

This is the Toyota Volta that has a 3.3 liter V-6 engine that is located behind the rear axle which is not directly connected to the wheels. Instead, its movement is provided by two electric engines, which has the safety benefits of an all-wheel drive. With 408 horsepower, the Volta could drive from zero to 60 in four seconds!

GM Saab Aero X

This GM Saab Aero X is not your typical vehicle. It has no doors and no fixed windshield. As you can see, its entire face could be opened upwards. Its manufacturer eliminated the conventional buttons and placed graphic 3D images instead.  It uses both turbo-charging and bio-fuel to come up to a 400-horsepower performance without burning even a single drop of petroleum. Its V6 engine is fueled by a hundred percent ethanol that makes its carbon emissions exactly zero. If you cannot find 100 percent pure ethanol, the Aero X’s engine management system could make adjustments for any gasoline-ethanol blend.

Being Safe On the Road Even At Old Age (2)

For the seniors out there, here is the continuation of my previous post. Even if you are not old yet, you are still welcome to read. I know that all of us will reach that time in life. So keep reading.

The third one is adjusting your vision. As we all know, driving concerns 95 percent visual information. However, the vision declines as a person gets older. With this, seniors should adjust to their vision such as limiting their driving only when the sun is high and seeking the help of eye specialists.

The fourth one is engaging in physical rehabilitation. Various types of exercise and physical therapy could greatly help seniors. A research conducted by Yale University School of Medicine finds out that even a 15-minute exercise a day could improve flexibility, coordination, and speed of movement of extremities in drivers aged 70 and above, especially those who are suffering from arthritis. With this, driving performance is projected to improve by at least 8 percent lower crash occurrence over two years.

Also included here is enhancing cognitive skills. A research in Maryland finds out that if a driver fails a cognitive test, that driver will be 25 percent more likely to get involved in a crash. As a person ages, the cognitive skills somewhat declines yet some scientists believe that such could be recovered still.

With that, a web-based simulation program was developed. Practicing it for 20 minutes a day, thrice a week, could improve the driver’s reaction time, short-term memory, visual scanning ability, and eye-hand coordination.

The last one is having tougher licensing laws. The state should be able to establish standards in determining when seniors should be prohibited to drive without being unfair to older drivers who are still capable.

So to seniors, I believe we can make the road a safer place to drive in. Have a good ride.

Being Safe On the Road Even At An Old Age (1)

If teens are problems on the road, senior drivers could also be! As old age comes in, driving could be a very dangerous activity. In this time and age, everything’s not going to be the same compared to a few years earlier. Be it physical, mental, or emotional hindrances, it is suggested that seniors should take extra care while driving.

As you would notice, the insurance for seniors are relatively higher compared to generations below their age. This is because insurance companies know that elderly drivers tend to injure themselves more than others during road accidents. So if you care much about safety, here are some tips to improve a senior’s driving skills.

First, limit your driving. If you feel like you are old already for a drive, especially when you are over 65, initiate to limit your own driving as you realize the changes in your capabilities. Limiting your driving includes avoiding crowded streets. Instead of traversing streets like that, taking alternate routes is far better. Though it would result to a longer trip, at least it would be a safer one. Also, as much as possible, you should engage in close-to-home locations only.

In line with this, a study that was published in the American Journal of Public Health mentioned that more than 600,000 drivers who are aged 70 years old or older give up driving each year. If you are a senior, evaluate your driving capabilities. You are the one who would greatly know if you need to give driving up or if you just need to limit your driving. Your choice will always count as these actions lessen the occurrence of accidents.

Another is to attend driving improvement classes. It would be great if seniors are open to the fact that they are not their same young selves anymore. With that, they would be willing to attend self-help classes. In fact, when seniors obtain a certificate from this kind of classes, insurance companies give them discounts on their premiums upon presenting the certificate. That makes sense.

These two would be all for now. Watch out for more other tips. I know you care about your safety. So keep safe.

Outrageous, Aren’t They? (2)

Excited about knowing more of the most outrageous cars of 2008? So let’s start. Let’s count from six to ten!

Hummer HX

The HUmmer HX

Sixth on the list is the Hummer HX. This is a small, off-road capable, convertible truck that will soon become an addition to the collection of Hummer fans.

Scion Hako

 The Scion Hako

Following the Hummer HX is the Scion Hako. The younger generation could be the market of this orange box with wraparound windows. In the interior of every Scion Hako are plenty of technologies such as Bluetooth phone capability and video cameras installed instead of side view mirrors where images are displayed on screens inside the door.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

Eighth on the list is the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe. This is described as sleek, fast, and fun. The interior speaks more of sophistication as a headliner entertains the passengers with flickering lights that almost resembles the night sky.

Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade

On the ninth place is the Jeep Renegade. This is an open-air off-road 4x4 that comes with an electric motor, which could run up to 40 miles per charge. Still, it is equipped with a backup diesel engine that could be used for longer drives.

Maybach 62 S

The Maybach 62 S

Finally, the lucky and last one on the list is the Maybach 62 S. This looks more like a high-powered limo with an unending list of amenities in the passenger section. To name a few are a mini-fridge, wine cooler, leather armchairs for seats, automatic window curtains, auto-tinting glass roof, and personal video screens for every passenger. Asking about the price? You can grab it at about half a million dollars.

Outrageous, Aren’t They? (1)

Nowadays, owning a vehicle has become a determinant of status. People tend to get the vehicles that will greatly speak in behalf of their numerous savings. Of course, who would not be proud driving the most sophisticated car? Who would not be glad driving a vehicle that almost everyone wishes to own?

With this nature of people, manufacturers are adjusting the style and performance of their vehicles. Vehicles are becoming more and more sophisticated than before. Each year, a dozen new vehicles are on the spot. Wondering about the best ones this year? Let’s take a look at the vehicles that are considered to be the most outrageous ones.

Lamborghini Reventon

The Lamborghini Reventon

The first on the list is the Lamborghini Reventon, a fighter jet-inspired super car. If you are the type of vehicle owner who wants a unique one, then this is for you. However, sad to say, your chance of owning one is already gone for only 20 of these were produced and all have already been sold at more than a million dollars each.

Smart Fortwo

The Smart Fortwo

Next on the list is the Smart Fortwo. This is the American counterpart of the classic European smart cars. This little car could reach up to 90 miles per hour.

Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron

Third on the list is the Bugatti Veyron. This is considered as one of the most expensive and one of the fastest cars on the planet. With its 1,001 horsepower, it could run for up to 250 miles per hour. However, if you are more concerned about fuel economy, you would rather not choose this for a tank of gas will only last for 12 minutes at full speed. Its price is over $1.5 million!

Tesla Roadster

The Tesla Roadster

So which one is in for the fourth? It’s the Tesla Roadster amounting to $98,000 per piece. With its Ferrari-like body, it is considered as the world’s first fully electric super car. Equipped with just a rechargeable electric engine, having no backup gas tank, a single charge of the battery could bring you to up to 220 miles in distance.

International CXt

The International CXT

We’re down now to the fifth. Here it is. The International CXT is now the largest production pickup truck on the road and it is built with the same platform as a dump truck.

So here are the top five of the most outrageous cars of 2008. However, included in the list are not just five but ten units so be on the lookout for the five other vehicles that would complete the list.

Fearing The Hybrid World

Many are taking a bow to the growth of hybrid vehicles in the auto world nowadays. Indeed, it is a fact that hybrid vehicles are one of the friendliest to the environment. There is no question about that. Seen nowadays as the savior of the worsening situation of our environment, hybrid vehicles are faced with a big problem that might stain their image. What could that be?  It is said that hybrid vehicles have health risks for people who come in contact with it.

Scientific studies reveal that the flow of electrical current to the motor of a hybrid that allows it to move at low speeds produces electromagnetic fields. These electromagnetic fields are now being associated with serious health effects such as the possible risk of leukemia among children.

In the current setup of hybrid vehicles, their batteries and power cables are often placed close to the drivers and passengers. With that, exposure to these electromagnetic fields could not be avoided. However, Toyota and Honda, the most dominant hybrid manufacturers, claim that according to their internal checks, their vehicles do not give added risks to occupants.

The National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute even agree and acknowledged the possible hazards of long-term exposure to a strong electromagnetic field. Though the amount of safe exposure to the electromagnetic field is still unknown, further studies are being considered. This is because experts say that it is not a good idea to ignore such potential risks, especially if the concern is people’s health. With that, I hope the answer would come out the soonest.

Color Coding On Vehicles

Colors really seem to speak for themselves. Amazingly, they could even speak for people. Take for example the color of car paint. Of course, in a way, they speak for the personality of the owner not unless the owner has no other option when upon buying. But more often than not, the colors of cars greatly tell to the curious eyes of people who their owners really are.

However, nowadays, car buyers tend to follow the trend of what’s hot and what’s not in picking their cars’ colors. They are so much affected by the demands of the present world that they ignore their real choices. Let’s start digging into the “in” things of car paint colors.

So you drive one of classic black, white, or silver cars? Records say that 50 percent of all the vehicles made in the United States come in these three classic colors. In these three shades, silver is the most popular. The sales of silver cars have stabilized but are seen to be declining. This is because the color of silver nowadays had become darker and people are given the feeling that what they are driving is so common.

How about an orange one in your garage? This color is the “in” thing today. This is because orange makes a vehicle appear sporty, active, and stylish. Orange has the capacity to scream to everyone the feeling of goodness, says Teresa Spafford, the lead color and materials designer of Mazda. Colors that could be lined up with orange are copper, bronze, terra cotta, and yellow gold.

Perfectly sitting inside blue and green ones? Blue is said to be both a classic like silver and a sporty one like orange for it has this calming effect.  However, green ones are losing popularity but they are soon going to be seen invading the streets with the growth of environmentally-friendly vehicles. Still, blue and green have influenced many emerging car paint hues in the auto market today.

Upon knowing these things, personally, I don’t go buying what’s hot as of the moment. The trend will always change. I buy my preferred color on a vehicle. Why? You could not taste the fruit of pleasing the eyes of so many people if your eyes aren’t even pleased in the first place.

Drive Away From Accidents (2)

Again, I’m back talking about the promised DON’Ts in driving. I know you appreciate the fact that accidents should be avoided as much as possible. Who would want to be in an accident in the first place? I assume that even the most adventurous person in the world would not wish to be involved in this kind of situation. So here, take a look.

  • Don’t remain in someone’s blind spot. Same as tailgating, keep a consistent space from other vehicles. Moving so close to one would be like begging for an accident, I tell you.

  • Don’t assume that trucks drive like cars. It would be great trouble if you happen to be involved in a collision with a truck. So keep your distance. Remember that trucks could not be operated as easily as your car.

  • Don’t play loud music. If you think that driving only requires the use of your eyes, you’re wrong. The ears should be used as much as the eyes are used. With loud music, how could you possibly hear other cars, especially horns and sirens? Think about it.

  • Don’t fool around. There’s no point in imitating what you see in movies. Concentrate on your driving instead.

  • Don’t drive when you’re tired. Did you know that driving when you are tired is a lot similar to driving under the influence? So when you really need to drive, take a nap first or take an energy drink or get some coffee.

  • Don’t commit intersection errors. Stop and look in all directions before you dare keep your car running in intersections.

  • Don’t give in to road rage. When you are angry or emotional, better not drive. The road could be so stressful and you may suddenly be in a road rage. That’s a problem.

I hope that upon knowing all these things, you are now ready to face the road without much fear of accidents. You know, accidents are sometimes in our hands. If we only make an effort to avoid it, we can do so. So, have a great ride!

Drive Away From Accidents (1)

If you read my previous posts about the DOs of driving so you could minimize the risks of meeting an accident, I tell you that doing those things is not enough still. There are things that you might be doing when driving that could bring you into trouble. With that, I compiled here the DON’Ts in driving for you to use to avoid meeting road mishaps.

  • Don’t eat or drink while driving. It is always necessary that when you drive, you use both hands. How could you comply with that if one hand is holding a burger, for example? If you badly need food in your stomach, then stick to easy-to-eat foods like snack bars and bottled water.

  • Don’t smoke. When you hold a stick of cigar, your movement will surely be limited making it hard for you to operate your vehicle. What more if you accidentally drop it? Imagine what trouble could happen!

  • Don’t keep loose objects in your car. Just don’t make the interior of your vehicle messy. Loose objects could roll or slide under the brake pedal. That would surely be trouble. Also, if you have a messy interior, chances are, you would keep an eye over these things so they won’t bother anything inside your vehicle. However, that would make you divert your attention from the road. It would also mean trouble.

  • Don’t tailgate. The safest distance from a vehicle is at least one car length. The more distance you can spare, the better. If someone is tailgating you, don’t risk your life by slamming the brakes just to teach that person a lesson. Give him a signal to move a little farther from you.

These would be all for now. There’s still more of the things you should NOT be doing while driving. So better watch out for my next post. I’m sure you’ll want to know more of it. Enjoy and be safe on the road.

Accidents No More (2)

So here is the promised continuation of my previous post about getting away from accidents. I hope this could help you. Take a look at the sixth to ninth reminders. Let’s start.

Fifth, beware of precipitation. When it rains, be aware that the roads will be slippery, a result of oil mixing with water on the road surface. Therefore, you should watch your speed.

Sixth, know your route. As much as possible, before you go driving through a particular route, you should know it completely. However, when it could not be avoided that you look at a map for directions, make sure that the map you got is easy-to-read and basically has large fonts so you won’t be distracted so much from your driving. If it is indeed hard to read, stop and read it.

Seventh, use hands-free devices for communication. With this, you would not anymore be tempted to use the phone making your other hand unavailable. You know it is important in driving to use both hands.

Eighth, follow road rules. You know this already! There’s no more need for elaboration.

Ninth, you should plan things ahead of time. There’s no point in wasting your time on the road thinking about where you’ll be heading. Remember, when you are in front of a steering wheel, a hundred percent of your attention is needed.

That would be all for now. Follow these as much as you can. I know we have the same desire of avoiding accidents. These are the DOs to avoid accidents. How about the DON’Ts? Watch out for my future posts on that. Have a safe ride always.

Accidents No More (1)

It is not anymore new to you that the scariest thing about driving or even riding a vehicle is the fact that meeting an accident is always a possibility. Perhaps, with this, the thought of not getting in contact with a vehicle had crossed your mind already. However, you cannot do that because you had grown so dependent on a vehicle. You have no other choice but to minimize, as much as possible, the risks of meeting a road mishap.

Though you would say that it is hard to get away from an accident, there are ways of minimizing at least the possibility of meeting it. Some things could really help.

First, check your vehicle regularly. You know, it doesn’t mean that when your car engine starts just fine today, nothing is wrong. Don’t assume that it is always at its best condition. Assume otherwise. It would greatly help if you ensure that all of the components of your vehicle are at the top of their shape. Many road mishaps are connected to a failing auto part.

Second, as much as the opportunity permits you, keep your vehicle a little isolated from the rest. It is always safe that you have a space where you can do your necessary moves and turns should the need arise.

Third, scan far ahead of you. Don’t limit your vision to the car just in front of you. When you scan farther ahead, you will be given much time to react about certain circumstances that could be happening ahead of you.

Fourth, communicate. You know this. Put your lights and flares on to alert other drivers about your move.

Here are only the first four of nine things to do to help you minimize the risk of meeting an accident. There are more to come and they are guaranteed to be of equal importance with the four mentioned here. Please refer to my future posts for the continuation of these important reminders for drivers like you. Be safe on the road always.

Are You Sleepy, Driver?

I hope it would not do you any harm if you find this blog entry talking again about drowsy driving. Well, it is. This is the sequel of my previous post Is Your Driver Sleepy. If in that post I was talking about how a passenger could tell if a driver is drowsy when driving, this post concerns the drowsy drivers themselves.

So when you are in front of a steering wheel, how could you know that it is the right time to stop and rest for a while? How would you know that another one mile drive could be a suicide already? Here, take these signs for you to check them out yourself.

  • Extremely tired eyes. If you experience difficulty in keeping your eyes open or focusing, better consider taking a break.

  • Weaving. Are you suddenly lost in the lanes? Bring your vehicle to a stop if your answer to that question is a yes.

  • Lost time. It doesn’t mean that when you can’t remember the last stretch of the road, you are getting old. Wake up! You’re just sleepy.

  • Disorientation. It’s obvious. Sometimes, problems are not the cause of disorientation in front of the steering wheel but drowsiness.

So if you happen to notice these signs, don’t allow yourself to drive more. There’s nothing wrong in pulling at the side of the road and taking a short sleep or break. Be concerned of everybody’s safety, please.

Is Your Driver Sleepy?

It is a fact that drowsy drivers are usually involved in road accidents. In fact, the National Sleep Foundation had stated that nearly half of all fatal crashes are attributed to fatigue or drowsy driving. To support that, even the Department of Transportation also estimates that about four percent of traffic fatalities in the U.S. are linked to fatigue.

Accident data had established the profile of drowsy drivers as young people (more often are males), those who have changing work hours, drivers who insist on driving through the night, those who drive long distances between breaks, and those who take medication (or even alcohol). Added to the list are drivers who drive frequently and those who drive alone.

However, the curse of drowsy driving does not only concern the driver but it extends even to innocent passengers and even to other people on the road. With that, passengers should be always on the lookout for drivers who sooner or later would fall into a catastrophic sleep in front of the steering wheel. So if you are a passenger, better watch out for these signs:

  • Weaving. Have you been noticing that the driver has been, most of the time, making steering corrections? Get that alarm ringing! He could be distracted enough by his fatigue or drowsiness from driving.
  • Erratic or confused behavior. When you notice that the driver had grown so quiet, it is a sign. Also, the same applies when the driver engages in conversations just to stay awake. A more obvious sign is if what he or she is saying doesn’t make any sense at all.
  • Restlessness. Fidgeting. This is a sign that the driver is fighting so much his or her urge to sleep. He or she keeps on moving around--restless as you call it.
  • Tailgating unusually close to other vehicles. More often than not, it’s not only tailgating but any driving style that’s unusually deviated from the normal practice of the driver.
  • The jerking neck. Also called microsleep, this is when the driver really falls asleep for a moment. This is for sure the sign you would not want to see. At least, the other signs involve the driver’s urge to fight it but in this case, it’s different and it’s more dangerous.
  • Other physical signs of fatigue. Signs such as frequent yawning, shallow breathing, and less frequent eye blinking speak of fatigue and drowsiness.

If you have been observing that the driver right beside or in front of you have these characteristics, then better advise him or her to stop and rest. It would be the safest move of a concerned passenger like you. Let’s all travel safely!

Stop Car Abuse!

More often than not, people grow very excited when it comes to owning a vehicle. When they have it in their hands, they tend to do so many things to it without knowing that some of what they are doing could ruin their most beloved possession. Sometimes, they think that what they are doing is best for them and for the vehicle, but in reality, it is not.

Here are five things that you should not do to your vehicle if what you want it to serve you longer.

  • Sunny day carwash. Don’t think that your car would be the same as you are when taking a bath during a hot and sunny day. It would do no good to your car’s finish, I tell you. The very fact that your car is exposed to the sun makes the metal hot to the touch. When you add moisture like water, it would help the sun heat the metal more thus giving it a bad finish. To tell you, a repaint would be the best thing to fix that problem. So if you want to escape from the additional expense of repainting, better wash your car on cloudy days or under a shade. Or if you can’t help but wash it today, wash it after dawn or in the late afternoon.

  • Pressure washing a modern car’s engine. Pressure sprayers are a big no! Degreasing an engine could be aided by a garden hose, but not by a pressure sprayer. This is because the sprayer could force water to go to parts where it is not supposed to go to. Moisture could cause electrical parts to malfunction so, as much as possible, it should not be allowed to get into some parts in the engine. You may enjoy more a dirty engine that works than a clean engine that does not work.

  • Overloading the alternator/charging system. You could be enjoying the loud music inside your car but are you sure that your car’s alternator and charging systems could handle that task? Today’s vehicles are equipped with so many devices that require energy from the alternator and charging system thus making the alternator work too hard. In that event, the alternator would just fail to charge the battery well so it easily drains. That would result to the frequent replacement of the battery, damage of the alternator itself, and failure to start your vehicle. So it doesn’t really pay to have a high-load stereo in your vehicle if what is in exchange is purchasing a new battery every month. Think again.

  • “Universal fit” wheels. Customizing a vehicle is a trend now. I understand that every person wants their possession to be unique so as to stand out from the rest on the road. One common step people make to personalize their vehicle is replacing the wheels. However, you should note that the replacement wheels you get are really designed to fit your car. Consult your car manufacturer about that. Don’t jump into the conclusion that “universal fit” wheels will do your vehicle good. It doesn’t mean that it is right for your vehicle because it is universal. Having them in your vehicle could be dangerous. You may also consult a tire shop for assistance regarding custom wheels.

  • Tow an automatic-equipped car with drive wheels down. This would be just short. This step is as simple as this: if you want to damage your car’s automatic transmission or shorten its service life, then it is better to allow your car to be towed with its drive wheels down. Simple.

So now you know, better not do it again. Just accept the fact that certain things are not good to your vehicle even when you are get benefits from what you have been doing. Think about your vehicle’s welfare too. Don’t abuse it. Now, ensure a longer driving experience with your vehicle.

Is Your Vehicle Expensive To Repair?

No matter how old or new your car is, it should be expected that it will undergo repairs in its entire lifespan. It is the inevitable part of owning a vehicle. You have to spend some money to keep it in tiptop condition. However, you might get a headache when you know that the vehicle you possess is one of the most expensive models to be repaired. Here take a look at this.

The first on the list are the luxury vehicles Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz G Class. Both have an estimated $1,640 of five-year repair costs. Joining these two vehicles in the top five are Jaguar XK at $1,629, Land Rover Range Rover at $1,600, and Mercedes-Benz CL Class at $1,540.

Audi A8

The Audi A8

Mercedes-Benz G Class

The Mercedes-Benz G Class

Please do note that these estimated costs of repair of the above-mentioned vehicles do not include yet maintenance costs. Meaning, when you own a model included in the list, it would cost you a lot to maintain its good condition through time. However, it does not mean that when you pay too much for repair, these vehicles are of low quality already. The reality here is that what is really expensive in these vehicles is the cost of labor and replacement parts. It is even said that it would require $100 or more per hour of labor for these vehicles compared to $70 per hour for normal vehicles. The cost of labor is explained by the fact that these vehicles have more complicated systems, therefore requiring a technician to take a special class just to master repairing those. Also, the complicated systems make the vehicle be repaired longer than usual, thus eating most of your dollars.

With this fact, if you are in a tight budget, I advise you to choose a vehicle that is not that expensive to repair. In that case, you would maintain the good condition of your vehicle all year round without spending that much.

What To Do When You Feel You Are Being Followed

You are being followed! You may often find this in movies or TV series. But are you certain that this could not happen in real life situations, especially to you? You may think you are not that prominent enough to expect this kind of situation however, I think there’s nothing wrong in knowing how to tell if someone is following your vehicle even if it is just a little chance.

To start with, there really is nothing wrong with being suspicious. You know there are things indeed that you know are not mere coincidences. When you see a car in this street and on the other one, it could be a coincidence. However, who would know that it is done intentionally?

First, observe the car that you think seems to move each time you move. Even if it is not confirmed yet that he is indeed following you, secure your vehicle’s doors and windows. If you are using the window for ventilation, just roll down the windows a little. As much as possible, the driver’s window should be the only window open. Just make sure that the window is not lowered enough to allow a hand to reach inside.

Next, take different movements and directions and see if they follow. You may slow down, speed up, and turn corners. If the car follows you still, then there really is something suspicious about it.

Then, you should go to a well-lit public area. Take for instance the area just before the front door of a grocery store. Park your car and act as if you are going to get out. But don’t get out yet, act as if you are getting something before you plan to get out. If the other vehicle stops too and no one gets out, wait for a few seconds and leave. On the other hand, if the person inside gets out of the vehicle and goes to the establishment, it could be a false alarm. Still, leave the area. It could be the best time to get away from them.

Lastly, if the car still follows you, drive to a police station and beep your vehicle horn over and over to catch attention. If you can’t find a police station, park in a well-lit area where there are many people. Don’t dare go home. For sure, it would not be a good idea to let that suspicious person know where you live.

Enjoying A Long Drive

Traveling is exciting! It could be one’s greatest experience ever. However, traveling, especially those long drives, could result to boredom. Whether you are a driver or a passenger, there are times that you could not help but feel bored. So here are some tips for you to survive the boredom you may encounter when you are off for a long drive.

  • Enjoy a good sleep the night before your intended travel. I assure you that you could not survive the road as a sleepy driver!

  • Have someone accompany you in your travel. Having someone to talk to or laugh with when you are starting to feel bored could be a great help.

  • Perform a mind trick. Instead of thinking that you are 1500 miles away from your destination, think that you are 130 miles away from the next city. In that case, you would have a sense of accomplishment everytime you approach another city or landmark.

  • Have a break often. Stop for a while and attend to your needs like going to the restroom or taking a meal or even stretching your arms and legs out. Those actions will surely awaken you.

  • Hear your choice of music. Listening to your sort of music could make your soul alive once more, thus helping you forget how many miles left for you to drive.

  • Start a conversation with your companion. For sure, you would not notice the time anymore. But be careful also that you don’t attend too much to the conversation that you lose concentration of the road ahead of you. Remember, safety first before anything else.

So what more could I say? Just enjoy your drive, fellow.

Be A Relaxed Passenger

When you are a passenger, your safety will depend on the driver. You are left without a choice. Therefore, when you are riding as a passenger, you should trust the driver. That is the reason why many people, especially adults, tend to choose which vehicle they are going to ride in. The truth is, what they are really looking for is a good driver. Of course, how could you trust your life on a reckless driver? Perhaps you would die first from a heart attack before your vehicle actually bumps into something on or near the road. However, sometimes, you really cannot choose the driver and you are left with no choice but to close your eyes and pray that you are already in your destination safe and sound.

But wait! Instead of collapsing in your seat, you can learn how to deal with it, especially if you can’t talk to the driver to say, “Slow down a bit, please!

First, stay calm. Make yourself panic less. Take deep breaths to help you calm down. Next, assess the situation. Observe the driver’s actions on how he is dealing with the situation. You may find that the driver is not really reckless as you think. It could only be that his driving style is far different from yours or from what you are used to. Also, it would be better if you talk to the driver calmly. Tell him that he needs to pay closer attention to the road and to observe the speed limit. Tell him that he is making you afraid and scared already. In that way, he could adjust to you and your fellow passengers. Then, you can also limit the distractions for the driver. If you can access the radio, turn it off. Help the driver concentrate on the road. In that case, you would feel calmer if he did. Lastly, be aware of the road environment you are in. Check for other vehicles, people, or animals on the road. Warn the driver if you see possible causes of road mishaps. With that, your fear will be diverted to a more productive activity.

I know that worrying about your safety is just normal. However, when you are in situations like this, you should know that worrying would only lead you to nowhere. So instead of worrying, why not stay calm and help yourself deal with the situation? Enjoy your ride, still.

Becoming Less Dependent On Your Vehicle

I am not in any way against the invention of vehicles. In fact, I think I just can’t live without one. The thought of not riding one in a day did not really come into my mind. Just recently. Perhaps, I could still depend less on vehicles, but for what reasons? Nothing, I just grew too dependent on it that I think I need to learn living without one. Being too dependent on a vehicle is not that good too, I realized.

In connection to that, I stumbled upon ways on how to depend less on your vehicle. I found this worthy of sharing. So let’s all take a look at these.

First, use the services near your residence as much as possible. Check out grocery stores, drug stores, restaurants, clinic, and the like. If establishments like these are near enough your residence, then you could go there by walking. If you do it, you not only saved fuel but also saved money and exercised.

In case you are still about to purchase a house, make sure you consider the proximity of the house to the area where you would be going to most of the time. Take for example your work place. When you own a house near your work place, you would begin noticing that a vehicle is not that important in the first place.

Also, it does not mean that when you own a car, you need not be familiarized with the local public transportation. That’s a real problem to car owners. In times that their car is not available, they feel so crippled to the point that they can no more proceed to their destination. They (or should I say we?) should note that it is possible to go anywhere else without riding in that precious car of yours (or ours)!

If you have time, try walking to places where the distance is possible enough for you to walk. As what is said, everywhere is a walking distance if you have time. Count the days you have lived without using your vehicle. With that, you would know that you are depending lesser on its services.

I hope we can make this! Good luck!

On Dealing With Accidents

The worst thing about being in a car is when you meet an accident. Lucky you if it is not that grave; however, serious accidents are always possible. And, accidents are accidents, they would say. Indeed, no one knows when and how will it happen. With that, it is of great importance that every one of us knows how to deal with accidents.

Some people may feel uneasy talking about this. However, it is just right to discuss this because it is a wiser and more practical move to be prepared. So let’s start.

First, when you unfortunately happen to be involved in an accident, make sure that right after the impact, you pull over your vehicle to a safer area where you and your vehicle cannot disturb the normal traffic.

After that, get off your vehicle and see the person in the other vehicle. Exchange information with him such as license and vehicle information. Take everything down.

When an argument arises as to who is responsible for the accident, call police officers. Also, make sure to take pictures of the entire incident. The vehicles, license plates, and local landmarks should be covered.

Seek medical attention if you need it and report all information gathered to your insurance company within 24 hours. In case you are injured, consult a personal injury lawyer for inclusion in the official statement to the other person’s company. (Remember that you need not always hire a lawyer. This is just a matter of informing you so that you would know what to do in cases of stress or injury.)

So these are all what you should keep in mind. Perhaps, these are not yet all of the important things you should do when dealing with an accident. However, these would still help, I believe.  But remember, being prepared could be good, but avoiding as much as possible to be in an accident is better.

Get The Most Out Of Selling Your Vehicle

When you are looking for a used car to purchase, what are your criteria? Of course, you should have some. The same applies when you are planning to sell your car. Make sure that you make your car meet your own criteria when you are purchasing a vehicle. It is because buyers most often agree at one set of criteria. With that, you can easily look for interested buyers or make the most dollars out of your old car.

Here are some things that you could consider so that you could have a greater chance of selling your car.

·         Make it presentable. Though it is always said that the exterior of a vehicle does not count so much, still many people would have an impression that the car is well-maintained and properly cared by the previous owner. However, it does not just end in the exterior; make sure that the car’s interior and engine are clean.

·         Fix obvious damage. At least fix damaged headlights, lenses, and the like. Of course, you would not want to give the buyer a reason not to buy your car. So as much as possible, have the damage repaired. More than that, the cost of damage could lessen the actual selling price of your vehicle.

·         Paintless dent repair and airbrush touch-up. Doing these would make the car look better, thus make it more appealing to the buyer. Note that you should ask the assistance of auto professionals in performing these things.

·         Windshield and tires. If there is a crack in the windshield, have it replaced depending on the location and size of the crack. This is because experts say that buyers will easily draw back in buying a car that has a six-inch crack near the driver’s line of sight. On the other hand, the tires should have some tread life still. They must be the proper size.

·         Remember the service records. Make sure you have the record well-organized for your car’s buyer. This is because a service record will give an impression to buyers that the car is properly cared and maintained.

·         Other considerations. Be honest on how you sell your car. Tell the prospective buyer about the real condition of the car and any problem he might be encountering along the way.

So these are all. Hope you sell your car with the most of it.

Saving A Life In A Flaming Car

It is possible for car fires to happen. To correct you, these don’t just happen in movies. So better get yourself ready to face situations like this so that you could, in any way, save lives. Of course, it is better to know some things dealing with it because a sudden attempt to rescue somebody in a car fire is almost suicide, I tell you.

When you happen to be at the scene, analyze first the danger you would be encountering. Assess the condition of the flaming car. If by any chance you see that attempting to rescue someone could bring you in danger, then better call for rescue workers who could do the job professionally. It’s not cowardice, if that’s what you think. Otherwise, when you decide to go on with your rescuing operation, remember to always keep your head low and face away from the vehicle as much as possible so that you would not be inhaling the fumes.

When you are already with the victim, unbuckle the seatbelt immediately. If you can’t do it, cut it using a pocketknife or other sharp objects available. Work very quickly to move away from the flaming vehicle. Remember to have the person’s neck supported for he may have a back or neck injury. If you can’t drag him alone, ask for other people nearby to help you. After getting off the vehicle, move at a safe distance from the vehicle to ensure that all of you are protected from flying debris, smoke, and flames.

All have been said. Simple as it may seem, proper care should be observed when in this kind of situation. This is a matter of life and death not only for the victim but also for you. In just one wrong move, you know what the consequences will be. Therefore, be safe.

The Reality Behind E85 (2)

Here are the third and fourth myths about E85:

Third, it is said that using ethanol as a fuel will eliminate global warming. At first, I thought it would be a yes but it is otherwise. Using ethanol as a fuel would not make the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to reach almost zero. Reducing CO2 emissions is just the other face of the coin. However, it should be noted that crops where ethanol is gathered from take in CO2 during their growth. When they are harvested, the number of plants that would help reduce CO2 in the atmosphere is lessened. Plus the CO2 they once took in is put back to the atmosphere when it is burned by the engine. Aside from that, people tend to forget that modern farming had led to the use of diesel-powered equipment that emits greenhouse gases. Also, the process of distilling ethanol uses electricity generated from coal, which is a contributor of greenhouse emissions too.

Lastly, it is said that ethanol is cheaper than gasoline. If we really talk about the price, then the answer is yes. However, when we try to look at the larger picture, we will realize that it is not after all. It is said that ethanol, no matter how much you pay for it than regular gasoline, contains lesser energy. Meaning, your vehicle with a gallon of E85 would not run as far as with a gallon of gasoline. Plus, the fuel economy will decrease by 20 to 30 percent.

So that would be all. But before I go, I would just make myself clear. The purpose of this post is not to discourage people to use E85 nor hate it. I just want to give information. Besides, people deserve the right to know both faces of the coin, especially if what is at stake is the condition of the environment, their vehicles, and financial capabilities. Just what is observed in journalism, a journalist should feed the public both sides of the story. It is up to the people where their judgment would lie.

The Reality Behind E85 (1)

Much had been said about the situation of the environment. Many ways had already come out of the way just to save Mother Earth. The most common of these ways is developing alternative fuels that, many people are claiming, will help improve the situation of the environment. I would not stand to claim stuff that are contrasting to what they have said. Personally, I very well like the idea of the sprouting alternative fuels today. However, there are things still that are unclear to us regarding such fuels. One of these fuels is ethanol or E85.

Though almost widely-used nowadays, people still tend not to know first-hand what ethanol really is. Many myths had sprouted regarding this fuel and this post aims to answer or correct the claims as far as my source is concerned.

First, people believe that ethanol is rarely used in cars here in America. That is not so true. Oftentimes, even people who actually use ethanol don’t really know that they are consumers of it. In many places here, small amounts of ethanol are mixed with gasoline having the purpose of reducing emissions. If you think that ethanol is only used for ethanol-fueled vehicles, 10 percent ethanol mixed with 90 percent gasoline is safe for most of the vehicles. Other higher ethanol mixtures such as E85 (a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline) should only be used for vehicles that are really designed for that kind of fuel.

Second, ethanol-ready vehicles are equally available in all sizes. Half of the number of vehicles that are designed to be powered by E85 is attributed to full-sized pickups and SUVs. Therefore, you may get disappointed when you try to look for small cars that could be efficiently powered with this kind.

So these are just two of the myths and there are two more to go. Watch out for my next post for the other two.

Turbosteamer: Another Solution For The Environment

Here we go again. I’ll be talking once again about the present situation of our environment. I can’t get off it. It’s indeed alarming. Now, what about it? Well, it’s another technology that could possibly save millions of lives in this generation, as well as in the next. You already heard of hybrid vehicles? Those are the vehicles that are now powered with different environment-friendly substances. This technology is somewhat similar to this. But still, it is something different.

It’s the Turbosteamer. If you are familiar with Francis and Freelan Stanley’s steamer, then you could well follow me. The same technology that powered their steamer is now being innovated to power steam engine cars. It makes use of the engine’s wasted exhaust gases to give power to the automobile.

In this system, a heat exchanger is located between the engine and the catalyst, which turns water into steam. This steam is then transported to a small steam engine. Another smaller steam engine produces more mechanical energy. When these two engines’ production is combined, a total of 14 horsepower and 15 pounds-feet of torque are generated. With that, fuel economy is improved by 15 percent in overall driving.

Historically, this technology is already being used by BMW with the intention of increasing fuel efficiency of its vehicles. The company is now eyeing to make the Turbosteamer ready for production in some of its vehicles within a decade’s time.

Well, I can only hope this would greatly help. I still wish for more technologies with great intentions like this to be developed in this growing auto world.

The Birth Of Aquada

amphibious

This is not just a boat or just a car. This is both! This amazing amphibious car, named the Aquada, was developed by the U.K.-based Gibbs Technologies. Though amphibious cars are not anymore new to the world, the Aquada, unlike other first cars of this kind, is designed by its maker not just to be another car that can swim. The company had incorporated auto, marine, and propulsion technologies to bring the Aquada to reality. This mighty vehicle is a product of seven years of engineering and development programs.

The Aquada is proud to get the record of being the world’s first High Speed Amphibian (HSA). It also is a record holder for amphibian vehicle speed. On land, it is capable achieve over 100 mph while it can go 30 mph on water. To be maneuvered in water, any of these entry points could be chosen: beach, boat ramp, slipway, or directly from the water’s edge. Once it has a successful entry to the water, a button is simply pressed and then the wheels will automatically rise. After that, you can already drive straight to the water! You just need to press the accelerator and you’re off to driving on water at over 30 mph. The amazing part is that all the things you should do before you can find your Aquada traveling in the water could be operated in just a matter of 12 seconds!

What’s more about this amazing amphibious vehicle? It is powerful enough to tow a water-skier. You can have a breathtaking experience with its open top! Such a sporty appeal!

All in all, it has a superb quality design that will surely catch the attention of people. It’s safety and performance, both on land and water, are tested by extensive testing programs. Also, the Aquada has complied with all the appropriate road and marine safety regulations.

However, other auto experts say that Aquada’s dual purpose machines are heavier and less efficient. Therefore, they said that we all should wait still for the production of the best dual purpose machines so as to ensure Aquada’s great performance. Still, it is seen that most of the potential owners of Aquada are secret service agents and rich people who would love being sighted in this toy during summers.

Don’t Be Under These Situations When You Are To Buy A Car

I understand that when people are about to purchase a car, they get too excited. However, that excitement should be controlled so as to lead you to the right car you are looking for. This is because, more often than not, buyers commit these mistakes when about to buy a new car:

  1. Falling in love with a model.  Forget your emotions. Your emotions could just lead you into choosing the car that is not really suitable for you. Don’t close your options to the vehicle model you want. This would just limit your judgment of other vehicles. If you really want a particular model, your tendency is to ignore other models and embrace all the features it has no matter how good or bad it is.
  2. Skipping the test drive. Don’t ever dare do this. You know that the vehicle you will be purchasing is to service you and not simply for decorative purposes. Sure, these vehicles appear as brilliant as they may seem in the glossy brochures of the dealers but you may never be sure that it performs as brilliantly as it appears. Doing a test drive is your only chance to test the vehicle you chose. This would be better than repenting forever why you bought such a ride.
  3. Buying unnecessary extras. Don’t be fooled by dealers who sell you other features just to earn extra profit. They are just a waste of money, I tell you. You can refer to my previous post (Getting Away From Irritating Dealers) to view detailed information about this.
  4. Negotiating down from the sticker price. Don’t look at the sticker price when you negotiate a deal with the dealer. A $500 discount is not that promising. Know its true cost and work on negotiating it up but lower than the sticker price.
  5. Focusing only on the monthly payment when negotiating. Know the real cost of the vehicle you are buying. Though perhaps you would pay just a small amount monthly, you might end up paying for other fees aside from the vehicle’s price and, worse, more than the sticker price! So make sure that you agree on the price of the vehicle first before negotiating the monthly payments for other fees.
  6. Buying the “deal” instead of the vehicle. Don’t just buy the vehicle just because you are getting a lot of discounts. Don’t take that bait. Make sure that you want what you’ll be purchasing because in the end you will be the one who will be using it.
  7. Waiting until you’re in a dealership to think about financing. Be always prepared. Before you go to a dealer, make sure that you are armed with the knowledge about financing terms. If you are not, you will be more likely to be manipulated by the dealer.
  8. Underestimating the value of modern safety features. Don’t just rely on the information the salesperson has to give you about the safety features of a vehicle. Research for the best safety features that will suit your needs and look for vehicles that are equipped with them.
  9. Not researching the value of your current car. If you have an old one, know its value so that you can know where you will be getting a good deal on it—trading it or selling it—before buying a new one.
  10. Not having a used car checked by an independent mechanic. When you buy a second-hand car, it is not only important that you spend less because in the end you could just find out that you wasted every dollar you spent on that. Have a professional mechanic to check it. Don’t be blinded by the exterior composition of the vehicle; be concerned of its overall condition.

So as much as possible, please avoid being in these situations. There would be no one else who would suffer when buying the wrong one but you. Therefore, make the right decisions. Have a good deal!

What To Do On A Test Drive (2)

The test drive continues here. Go check these things now. After learning all these things, you will be ready to decide whether you’ll purchase that particular vehicle or not. Here, check these:

  • Test the power. Are you satisfied with the power the vehicle has for you especially in times of sudden acceleration? Also, don’t forget to check the power when the air conditioning is turned on because this could cause a serious drain on small engines.

  • Evaluate the transmission. If the car has a manual transmission, check if the shifter and clutch are smooth to operate. Same as with an automatic transmission vehicle. Make sure that the upshifts and downshifts could be operated smoothly.

  • Check for better handling. Check how the car reacts to situations such as long turns, sudden swerves, and smooth transitions. Is it stable and controllable? Also, are you feeling that you could possibly avoid an accident if the need arises?

  • Try the brakes. Ensure that the brakes perform its function properly like slowing you down in a straight and controlled manner. Practice braking softly and then aggressively to know if it could serve you best in different situations.

  • Hear noises. Just be on the lookout for noises that you hear from the engine, interior, road, and wind both when the windows are open and when they are closed. Of course, you would not want to drive a car that gives you excessive noises! That would be irritating!

  • Have it parked. Park it and see how the car looks in the real world. See if it still appears as appealing as it was when it was still at the dealer’s lot.

So here are the things you should do when you are to test drive a car. If you think you can’t go checking all these things, have a knowledgeable friend come with you. If you see problems, then look for other cars that could give you the satisfaction that you want. Of course, you would not want to invest in a vehicle that is not as perfect as you want it to be.
