MirrorPilot: A Safer Rearview Mirror

As a part of the desire of Magna Donnelly to promote a safer travel, it has joined forces with U-Blox (Swiss technology provider) and Paragon (German electronics supplier) to develop a new device. It is called the MirrorPilot—a navigation system that has a map displayed in the rear view mirror.

Mounted on the windshield, this rearview self-dimming mirror has a GPS receiver, antenna, speaker, and 2.2-inch screen. By this great move of placing the nav system in the mirror, there’s no more point in worrying about hard installations and limited views of the road.

The MirrorPilot has a special feature of zooming in at intersections and giving the driver a clear route during bumper jams. It also has a remote control so it could easily be used by busy drivers.

Crash-Avoidance Systems: An Analysis

The fact that road mishaps are happening frequently makes auto manufacturers worry about the safety features that their vehicles are offering. This is the reason why most auto makers continue to develop safety features so as to reduce the number of fatal crashes. Today, they have come up with crash-avoidance technologies that they claim to have the capability to improve the chances of avoiding collisions. Some include technologies that have the capacity to give an audible or visual warning to command the driver to do corrective measures. There are even those which have the capability to automatically apply the brakes or guide back into the proper lane a drifting car.

However, even the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) is getting a hard time to tell whether such is effective or not because its use is not widespread yet. Still, the IIHS just analyzed five crash-avoidance technologies: forward collision warning, emergency brake assist, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, and adaptive headlights.

Of these features, the IIHS sees the forward collision warning and the lane departure warning as the most promising features. The forward collision warning feature gives the driver a warning whenever it detects that the vehicle is about to hit an object directly in front of it. On the other hand, the lane departure warning tells the driver if they are drifting out of the lane.

Based on the information gathered by the IIHS from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System and General Estimates System, the IIHS identified the types of crashes that all these features have been designed to prevent. In period of four years, which is from 2002 to 2006, there is a possibility that the 20 million frontal collisions could be reduced in half with the aid of the forward collision warning. Though it could not totally erase incidents of frontal collisions, a 50 percent reduction is a good deal. On the other hand, the lane departure warning could prevent up to 100,000 crashes and 2,500 fatalities per year.

The IIHS also announced that of the five safety features they have been analyzing, it is the blind spot detection that shows the least potential. This safety feature alerts the drivers of their blind spots. This conclusion is not because that its capabilities are ineffective but because there are not much fatal crashes that involve vehicles in blind spots.

Becoming Less Dependent On Your Vehicle

I am not in any way against the invention of vehicles. In fact, I think I just can’t live without one. The thought of not riding one in a day did not really come into my mind. Just recently. Perhaps, I could still depend less on vehicles, but for what reasons? Nothing, I just grew too dependent on it that I think I need to learn living without one. Being too dependent on a vehicle is not that good too, I realized.

In connection to that, I stumbled upon ways on how to depend less on your vehicle. I found this worthy of sharing. So let’s all take a look at these.

First, use the services near your residence as much as possible. Check out grocery stores, drug stores, restaurants, clinic, and the like. If establishments like these are near enough your residence, then you could go there by walking. If you do it, you not only saved fuel but also saved money and exercised.

In case you are still about to purchase a house, make sure you consider the proximity of the house to the area where you would be going to most of the time. Take for example your work place. When you own a house near your work place, you would begin noticing that a vehicle is not that important in the first place.

Also, it does not mean that when you own a car, you need not be familiarized with the local public transportation. That’s a real problem to car owners. In times that their car is not available, they feel so crippled to the point that they can no more proceed to their destination. They (or should I say we?) should note that it is possible to go anywhere else without riding in that precious car of yours (or ours)!

If you have time, try walking to places where the distance is possible enough for you to walk. As what is said, everywhere is a walking distance if you have time. Count the days you have lived without using your vehicle. With that, you would know that you are depending lesser on its services.

I hope we can make this! Good luck!

Turbosteamer: Another Solution For The Environment

Here we go again. I’ll be talking once again about the present situation of our environment. I can’t get off it. It’s indeed alarming. Now, what about it? Well, it’s another technology that could possibly save millions of lives in this generation, as well as in the next. You already heard of hybrid vehicles? Those are the vehicles that are now powered with different environment-friendly substances. This technology is somewhat similar to this. But still, it is something different.

It’s the Turbosteamer. If you are familiar with Francis and Freelan Stanley’s steamer, then you could well follow me. The same technology that powered their steamer is now being innovated to power steam engine cars. It makes use of the engine’s wasted exhaust gases to give power to the automobile.

In this system, a heat exchanger is located between the engine and the catalyst, which turns water into steam. This steam is then transported to a small steam engine. Another smaller steam engine produces more mechanical energy. When these two engines’ production is combined, a total of 14 horsepower and 15 pounds-feet of torque are generated. With that, fuel economy is improved by 15 percent in overall driving.

Historically, this technology is already being used by BMW with the intention of increasing fuel efficiency of its vehicles. The company is now eyeing to make the Turbosteamer ready for production in some of its vehicles within a decade’s time.

Well, I can only hope this would greatly help. I still wish for more technologies with great intentions like this to be developed in this growing auto world.

6 Alternative Fuels For Your Vehicle

The price of gasoline is going too high! Its increase is uncontrollable now. But who is to blame? But that is not the issue now. It is actually about using our vehicles less. How? You may want to commute, but you would still feel the burden for the fare is rising too! What a headache it could give! Wait! I have stumbled upon a solution for that problem. I thought you may want to know about it too so I am making this entry.

Here are the top six alternative fuels that we can use instead of the diamond-priced gasoline:

Number 6: Biodiesel. This fuel is made from waste vegetable oil or animal fats. This could be domestically produced. It could be mixed with petroleum diesel fuel making car emissions lesser.

Number 5: Electricity. More vehicles nowadays are becoming electrically powered. Aside from its cheaper price, it is also more environment-friendly.

Number 4: Ethanol. This fuel is more commonly known as E85. Many gas stations in the world nowadays offer this kind of fuel. It is also cheaper and safer to the environment.

Number 3: Natural gas or methane. This is produced off the back of oil drilling. There are methane-powered vehicles nowadays in the market but you can convert your gasoline-powered vehicle into a methane-powered one. This fuel is really cost-effective.

Number 2: Propane. This kind of fuel is utilized more for vehicles that are operated indoors because propane burns clearly. That is just the same as the propane you use when cooking.

Number 1: Hydrogen. This natural element is said to be the least damaging and the cheapest fuel for a vehicle. Just consult experts on how to convert your vehicle into a hydrogen-running one.

I hope this helps.

Run Away From Deadly Bullets

Sometimes, even when you want to have a great driving experience, some things seem to make it impossible to achieve. There are many dangers that could await you. Road accidents are the most common of it. However, there is a thing that could make your nerves shake more--that is a bullet. Why is it scarier? It is because you don’t know when that will hit that precious car of yours and your life as well! To avoid that, why not upgrade your car and make it a bulletproof one?

Having a bulletproof vehicle should not only be for politicians or people who receive death threats. It is important that an ordinary vehicle be equipped with this feature too. You would not know when you would meet a stray bullet, especially if you drive in a high-crime area.

If you are convinced, you don’t need anymore to buy a new one. Converting your vehicle into a bulletproof one could be as simple as following these steps:

  1. There are now bullet-resistant windows in the market that could be installed in your vehicle. These come in either two-way or one-way resistant windows. The latter allows you (who is inside the vehicle) to shoot at the attackers without letting their bullets to pass through your windows. The two-way resistant windows do not permit any bullet to pass, be it going inside or outside of the vehicle.
  2. Dress your vehicle’s exterior with multi-layered nylon armor. It could be fitted easily between the sheet metal body panels of your vehicle and its interior furnishing. Also, it is advisable that you mount this armor under the carpet so that the vehicle’s floor will be protected from bomb fragmentation.
  3. Make use of run-flat tires. These tires could run at high speeds and could still run even when your tires are deflated. You should take note that a bullet could deflate your car’s tires!
  4. Ensure that the gas tank is protected because they are the most common roots of explosion when a bullet gets in contact with it. There is a ballistic wrap that could prevent such thing. Also, you can use an anti-explosive fuel tank.
  5. Your car battery should be upgraded into an anti-ballistic one. This special battery is constructed with dry cells having no acid content, which could be a cause of explosion.

With these steps, you are guaranteed to be protected from those deadly bullets. However, all the things needed are expensive unlike those ordinary auto parts. But it still pays to spend more than seeing yourself or your passengers dead. Have a safe ride always.

Cutting Fuel Consumption

I know that the price of fuel at present is rising like crazy! If not only for our desperate need to go somewhere, we would not be falling in line at the gasoline stations. In short, we are left with no choice. However, we can still save some of our dollars even though the price of fuel is high. We should only learn how to save fuel so that we don’t need anymore to buy as frequent as before. I am already practicing to do it; you want to know it too? Then listen!

First, you should get off the habit of turning your engine on in the morning to warm it. It’s not a good idea. Don’t run the engine sitting there idly for more than 30 seconds. If you turn the engine on, drive directly to where you will be going. Besides, driving the vehicle would warm up the engine faster.

Next, when you are already driving, drive smoothly. As much as you can, do away with hard acceleration and braking because it could use up more fuel.

Also, don’t drag things as much as possible. Carry the load at the top of your vehicle. It would consume less fuel than dragging something.

Another is to use the air conditioner of your vehicle only when it is needed.

Furthermore, always watch your tires. Ensure that they are properly inflated. Otherwise, these will require more energy to roll resulting to a waste of fuel.

Lastly (I know that this is really not the last thing you could do, there are more ways), maintain the good condition of your vehicle. A vehicle in poor condition can only eat up more of your fuel. So better not permit this to happen.

Just do these things for the moment. For sure, you will also experience a cut in your vehicle’s fuel consumption. These steps are far more practical than spending up to the last of your dollar in fuel. Try it.

Sugar: To Power Vehicles Soon

The worsening situation of our environment nowadays has led the way to the introduction of a lot of new technologies—all have the purpose of helping save the environment. One of these is the introduction of the hydrogen-powered vehicles that do not emit any harmful substances. Many auto manufacturers had ventured into making vehicles of this type. However, a problem is now arising to the success of these hydrogen-powered vehicles. That is the absence of a cheap and abundant source of hydrogen production that will support these vehicles. That was the problem.

But that problem had already been given a solution now. Some scientists from Virginia Tech had developed a different process of producing hydrogen. This has something to do with the conversion of sugars from plants, which is called cellulose, into hydrogen. The sugars are combined with water and some enzymes. After that, hydrogen is already produced. Still, this solution is not that successful yet. The amount that could be produced by this process is remarkably little to serve its commercial purpose. However, the bottom line here is that this is some sort of a light to the world saying that there are indeed possible ways to solve a worsening situation. Don’t lose hope fellows.

Let Every Country Be Like Britain

Britain should be looked up at highly. Even the United States should do it! Look how they achieved having the lowest driving fatality rates. The World Health Organization found out that the rate of fatal traffic accidents there is in the country is 5.6 people every 100,000 people as compared to the Unites States with 15 for every 100,000. Also, traffic injuries only cost 0.5 percent of Britain’s annual gross domestic product while the United States uses 2.3 percent of it. One more thing, the International Road and Traffic Accident Database states that there are only 7.6 recorded fatalities in Britain for every billion kilometers. Compare that to America’s 9.4 record. That really makes sense.

How did Britain exceptionally achieve all of these? The answer is simple. They have developed the world’s strictest road rules. It all started in the 50’s to the 60’s when Barbara Castle, transportation minister that time, had introduced the 70mph highway speed limit, breathalyzer tests for drivers that are suspected to be drunk, and compulsory seatbelts in new cars. In addition to that, the government of today had implemented tough driving tests, ad campaigns, and speed bumps in the road.

The driving tests they have are so tough that only 42 percent of its takers pass. They also have effective advertising campaigns sponsored by the government, and speed bumps or the “sleeping policemen” are placed in the streets to prevent the drivers to speed up. Their strict reinforcement of every rule on the road is also to be looked up to. They are installing more and more hidden cameras that aid in the ticketing of overspeeding vehicles. Once you get four tickets in the span of three years, then expect for a suspension of your license. The drinking drivers, if they get caught, would not be permitted to drive for a year!

Look how effective Britain is in lessening the dangers brought about by careless people driving on the roads. Every government should be like this. What’s more to Britain now? Their prime minister, Tony Blair, still wants to cut the rate of accidents by 40 percent by the end of 2010.

Making The Right Decision

Getting a new car and throwing the old one away is not that easy. It may be easy to think about it but it is hard to decide on what to do. You may think that an old car is not a good one. However, some things should be considered before buying a new one. Mind you, the amount of vehicles today have grown remarkably higher compared to the number of vehicles available when you bought your old one. Therefore, it is not that easy to purchase a new one.

However, if you have enough money and you are really dying to get a new unit, then I am permitting you to do so. It’s your choice and prerogative to enjoy the glory of working so hard to earn money for a new vehicle. So if you have the resources, you could buy one but just make sure that the new one you’ll get will be far better than the old one.

But if you are really thinking of replacing your old one but you are not yet sure if your decision is right, then you should think harder. Think of the moments you have with this car and analyze its performance. Have you ever been in so much trouble because of the poor performance of this car? Have you ever spent a large amount of money to pay for repair? If your answer to both questions is yes, it is a better idea to get a new one. If in case that your old vehicle has not given you any problems yet, then what’s the point of buying a new one? Think of the main reason why you want a new vehicle. Whatever reason you have there, I know that you know whether it is really a need or just a luxury. I’ll be in favor of those people who consider their plans of buying a car a need. So if you don’t really need a new vehicle, then why bother to buy one?
